A DEB based analysis of growth and toxin elimination processes in mussels (Mytilus edulis) exposed to Diarrhetic Shellfish Toxins (DST) ArchiMer

A Dynamic Energy Budget(DEB) model was used to analyse growth and toxin elimination processes in musselsthat had been exposed to Diarrhetic Shellfish Toxins (DST). After DST exposure mussels were placed inan experimentalin-situ setup, expected to have low concentrations of toxic phytoplankton, and DST concentrations in mussel tissueswere regularly monitored along with temperature and seston concentration and composition in the water. A one-compartment model for DST concentrations and elimination rate was integrated with the DEB model, assuming that storage and structural compartments absorb DST. Growth performance and detoxification of mussels cultured in a fjord enhanced by forced upwelling of nutrient rich deep water (GATE) ArchiMer

Objectives The objective of the study is to assess how phytoplankton composition and quantity enhanced by forced upwelling of nutrient rich deep water in a fjord affects growth performance and detoxification in cultured mussels. Sub goals are: 1. monitor the fjord environment and succession of phytoplankton including toxic algae, 2. contrast feeding and growth performance in mussels affected and unaffected by the enhanced phytoplankton assemblage forced by upwelling of nutrient rich deep water, 3. estimate elimination rate of algae toxins in mussels introduced to enhanced phytoplankton concentration forced by upwelling of nutrient rich deep water.

Modelling growth variability in longline mussel farms as a function of stocking density and farm design ArchiMer

Mussels (Mytilus edulis) are commonly cultivated on artificial structures like rafts, poles or longlines to facilitate farming operations. Farm structures and dense mussel populations may result in water flow reduction and seston depletion and thus reduced individual mussel growth and spatial growth variability inside a farm. One of the challenges in mussel farming is thus to scale and configure farms in order to optimise total mussel production and individual mussel quality under different environmental regimes. We combined the use of pigments, fatty acids and sterols as biomarkers of the seasonal variation in food sources of the great scallop Pecten maximus. From March to October 2011, on a biweekly to twice-weekly basis, scallops and seawater from the water column and the water-sediment interface were collected in the Bay of Brest (Brittany, France). Pigment compositions in the seawater and in the stomach and rectum content of the scallops were analyzed by HPLC. Fatty acids and sterols from digestive gland (DG) tissue were analyzed by gas chromatography. Response of Mytilus edulis to enhanced phytoplankton availability by controlled upwelling in an oligotrophic fjord ArchiMer

The controlled upwelling of nutrient-rich deep water in oligotrophic coastal regions has been proposed as a means of increasing phytoplankton and, subsequently, bivalve aquaculture production. This was tested as part of a large-scale upwelling experiment in an oligotrophic environment (Lysefjord, Norway). The mean chlorophyll a concentration in the upwelling area was consistently higher than at the control site (mean ± SD: 3.3 ± 1.9 and 1.5 ± 0.6 mg Chl a m-3, respectively) during the 4 mo of controlled upwelling. After 2 mo with upwelling, the dry flesh weight of 1 yr-old and 2 yr-old mussels was 95% and 24% higher, respectively, than that of the mussels at the control site. Variability in particle retention efficiency by the mussel Mytilus edulis ArchiMer

Seasonal variation in blue mussel, Mytilus edulis, retention efficiency (RE) responses to natural seston concentrations were investigated in the Lysefjord, Norway. The smallest particles shown to be effectively retained (100%) were approximately 7 μm and this was observed on only one occasion. The most common response was for RE to progressively increase from small to large particles with maximum RE at 30 to 35 μm (8 of 12 experiments). Temporal changes in the seston size distribution towards a dominance of smaller particles coincided with a decrease in the RE maxima to particles between 7 and 15 μm diameter.
